You’ll most likey want a good pair of headphones or earbuds to use with this laptop if you don’t have one already. There’s very little bass, so everything from your Spotify playlist to your next Netflix binge will sound a bit thin. The audio coming from the Spin 514’s speakers (which sit on either side of the keyboard) leaves much to be desired.

This is particularly disappointing for something that can be used as a tablet, when the screen essentially becomes the whole device.

The Spin 514’s brightest setting is quite dull and often leaves you squinting whether sitting inside or outside, even near a sunny window. The screen will frustrate you on both laptop and tablet mode. Just keep in mind that there are keys and a trackpad on the other side, so you won’t want to bump the device too aggressively against the surface of your desk or kitchen table. It’s hard to imagine using this as your main tablet if your work relies on one-career artists, for instance, won’t get the same use out of this as an iPad-but if you just want to read an e-book or flip through a presentation now and then, or watch a movie, the Spin 514 will work. You also get quite a bit of touchscreen real estate with that responsive 14-inch display, which supports Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) styluses. The touch screen is responsive, making casual web browsing, reading, and doodling a breeze. This laptop is easy to “spin” into a tablet just push the screen back until it folds. As more laptops do away with USB-A and HDMI ports, leaving consumers to scramble for various dongles, it’s convenient to have both in the Spin 514. You can use either a USB-C port to combine the Spin 514 with a second monitor or a conference room display via DisplayPort, but you’ll need a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. On the right, you get another USB-C port (plus volume controls and your power button). On the left, you get the USB-C power port, a USB-A slot, an HDMI slot, and a standard headphone jack. It also feels durable enough to handle daily use and frequent commuting, making it a viable option for students or professionals on the go. At 3.6 pounds and 15 inches corner to corner, the laptop fits into a tote bag or backpack comfortably enough. The generous trackpad accommodates both force touch and light tapping. The keys are responsive and sit at a “Goldilocks” travel level not enough travel to fatigue your fingers, but just enough to provide a satisfying feeling for both rapid typing and slower pecks. Its keyboard is satisfying and adequately spaced, reducing spread without feeling too cramped. The Spin 514 is clearly built for comfort. Overall a very comfortable laptop, especially the keyboard.
